Village Pursuing Demolition of Dilapidated Schroeder Building

A long-standing village eyesore may finally be coming down, as Peotone officials reported Monday that legal processes are underway to demolish the dilapidated building on Schroeder Avenue.

During the Village Board meeting, Mayor Chris Vieaux and a village administrator provided an update on the property, which has been a source of resident concern for years. The issue is currently in the court system, described by the administrator as a “battle between the mortgage company and the owner.”

The village’s attorney is actively working through the legal channels to reach a resolution.

“They are of the mindset that it needs to be demoed, which we all knew,” the administrator said of the parties involved. “You guys probably knew years ago.”

The property is currently surrounded by fencing, but pictures were recently sent to the village’s attorney showing that the grass is now growing out of control.

While officials could not provide a firm timeline for the demolition due to the ongoing legal proceedings, they expressed optimism that the situation is moving toward a final resolution. The administrator also noted that the property’s future looks bright should it become available.

“There are other interested parties that if it went on the market, I think other people would be interested in building there,” he said. “Hopefully it’s once it’s demoed and cleared, it won’t be there long before somebody’s building.”
