Meeting Briefs: Peotone Village Board for July 14, 2025
Travel Center Project Nears Completion: The Village Board approved a fourth reduction in the letter of credit for the Peotone Travel Center, a sign that the $32 million-plus project is nearing completion. The reduction of $44,275 leaves a balance of $22,902.25 to cover remaining items. Officials noted the Holiday Inn Express component of the project opened in late May and has already begun generating tax revenue for the village.
Finance Department Earns National Award: For the fourth consecutive year, Peotone’s finance department has received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA). Mayor Chris Vieaux praised finance director/treasurer Annmarie Mampe and finance analyst Diane Nielsen for their work, noting the award reflects the village’s commitment to the highest principles of governmental budgeting.
Police Department Seeks Grant for Cameras, Narcan: Police Chief David DeMik announced he is applying for an Amplifund grant of up to $250,000 from a county opioid settlement fund. The grant would be used to purchase fixed and license plate reader (LPR) cameras and to fund a Narcan distribution and training program to combat opioid use in the community.
Knights of Columbus ‘Tootsie Roll’ Drive Approved: The board approved the annual Knights of Columbus Intellectual Disabilities (ID) Fund Drive, also known as the “Tootsie Roll Drive.” The fundraising event, where volunteers collect donations on village streets, is scheduled for September 19-21, 2025.
‘Sip & Stroll’ Event Gets Go-Ahead: The Peotone Chamber of Commerce received approval for its “Sip & Stroll” event on September 11, 2025, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The board approved the necessary road closures and waived the fee for the one-day Class C-2 liquor license.
Conrad Street Sewer Project Hits Minor Snag: Public Works Manager Bob Hennke reported a “hiccup” in the Conrad Street storm sewer project. A sanitary sewer line was found to be in the path of the new storm sewer and will need to be relocated. Despite the issue, Hennke stated the project is still on track to be completed before school begins in August.
Village Mourns Former Administrator: Mayor Chris Vieaux expressed condolences to the family of Greg Spatis, a former Peotone village administrator who recently passed away. The board held a moment of silence in his honor.
