Peotone Approves Additional $35,000 for Crawford Street Resurfacing

Article Summary:

The Peotone Village Board has approved a $35,000 increase for the Crawford Street resurfacing project, bringing the total appropriated funds to $225,000. The additional Motor Fuel Tax (MFT) funds were needed after engineering assessments determined a thicker layer of pavement was necessary and construction bids came in higher than originally estimated.

Crawford Street Project Key Points:

  • The Village Board passed a supplemental resolution to appropriate an additional $35,000 in Motor Fuel Tax (MFT) funds.

  • The cost increase was caused by two factors: higher-than-anticipated bids and a change in the project’s scope.

  • After taking core samples, engineers determined it would be better to apply a four-inch layer of new pavement instead of the originally planned two inches.

  • The project, currently underway, involves resurfacing East Crawford Street between E. Railroad Street and Harlem Avenue (IL 50).

PEOTONE, IL — The budget for the ongoing resurfacing of a section of East Crawford Street has increased by $35,000 after the project’s scope was expanded and bids came in higher than expected.

The Village Board on Monday approved a supplemental resolution authorizing the additional spending from its Motor Fuel Tax (MFT) funds. The village had initially approved a resolution in April for $190,000 for the project, which covers East Crawford Street between E. Railroad Street and Harlem Avenue (IL 50).

Village Administrator Nick Palmer explained that the need for more funds arose from two issues. First, bids for the work were higher than initial projections. Second, after the project was approved, core samples of the existing road revealed that a more substantial repair was warranted.

“We did coring and found that, you know, we could do a little deeper instead of doing two inches, do four inches,” Palmer told the board. “So that increased the cost a little and then we bid it out and it came back a little higher than expected.”

Palmer assured the board that the village has the necessary MFT funds to cover the increase, which he and the village engineer recommended as the “right thing to do” for the long-term quality of the road. Because the project uses state-managed MFT funds, the village was required to pass a formal supplemental resolution to be sent to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) to account for the budget change.

The project is currently in progress. Village Engineer Troy Golem of Robinson Engineering reported that concrete pouring was done Monday. He anticipated crews would mill the old road surface on Friday, perform patching next Monday, and begin paving the following week, weather permitting.

The board approved the supplemental resolution, 25R-14, unanimously.
