Meeting Summary and Briefs: Peotone Village Board for August 11, 2025

The Peotone Village Board took action on several significant operational and infrastructure issues during its August 11 meeting, including initiating a plan to replace its failing finance software and formally mandating that all residents subscribe to the village’s contracted garbage service. Officials described the current financial system as being “ready to crash completely” after it caused major payroll and efficiency problems. For more detail on the planned overhaul, see the full story. In another major decision, the board amended its code to make it explicit that residents cannot opt out of refuse collection with Homewood Disposal after a few had recently attempted to do so. The change solidifies the company as the exclusive provider for the village.

On the infrastructure front, trustees approved an additional $35,000 for the Crawford Street resurfacing project. The cost increase was necessary after engineers determined a thicker layer of pavement was needed and bids came in higher than anticipated. The board also approved over $518,000 in payments to contractors for the nearly finished Conrad Street storm sewer replacement and ongoing work at the I-57 interchange. Finally, citing numerous accidents, officials announced a plan to lobby state and county leaders for safety improvements at the dangerous intersection of Route 50 and County Line Road.

Hope Homeschool Pod Welcomed to Peotone
The village board officially approved a business registration for Hope Homeschool Pod, LLC, a new learning center located at 109 W. Main Street. The center’s owners, who have over 30 years of combined teaching experience, told the board they offer families an alternative to public school. A ribbon-cutting ceremony with the Chamber of Commerce is scheduled for August 13 at 8:00 a.m. to celebrate the opening.

Committee Forming for USA’s 250th Anniversary Parade
Mayor Chris Vieaux announced he is organizing a committee to plan a Fourth of July parade for 2026 to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States. He is seeking volunteers from both the village board and the community to help organize the event. The mayor noted the village has not held its own parade in several years and wants to make the anniversary celebration a notable one.

Trustees to Tour Police and Public Works Facilities
Board members will get a firsthand look at the conditions of the village’s police and public works facilities in the coming weeks. Following a trustee’s suggestion, the board plans to hold a posted public meeting for a group tour of the police station and village hall before their next Committee of the Whole meeting on August 25. The goal is for trustees to stay current on the state of the facilities and the needs of the departments.

Board Expresses Support for Injured Superintendent
Mayor Chris Vieaux publicly shared well wishes for Peotone School District 207-U Superintendent Brandon Owens, who was recently in an accident. On behalf of the board, the mayor said he hoped everyone would keep Owens in their prayers and wished him a quick recovery.

Routine Items Approved on Consent Agenda
The board unanimously approved its consent agenda, which included payroll and accounts payable totaling over $851,000. It also included a single-day raffle license for the Manhattan American Legion Post 935 to hold a fundraiser at the Will County Fair from August 20-24. A special event permit was also approved for a birthday party on August 23, which includes closing the east entrance of the alley between Lincoln and Sumner at Second Street.
