The Peotone Village Board on Monday, October 13, 2025, authorized over $921,000 in payments for major infrastructure work, including the final payment for the downtown streetscape. The board also awarded a nearly $42,000 contract for its annual sidewalk replacement program and received the welcome news that the long-blighted property at 528 Schroeder Avenue has been demolished. For more information, see our full coverage on the infrastructure payments and the new sidewalk program.

In other business, the board recognized community leaders, received project updates, and approved a utility easement.

Clerk Hartwell and Ed Nelson Receive Honors
Mayor Chris Vieaux congratulated Village Clerk Stacey Hartwell on completing her three-year professional education program with the Municipal Clerks of Illinois Institute. The mayor also recognized Ed Nelson, President of the Peotone Historical Society, for receiving an Award of Merit from the Visit Chicago Southland organization for his work in preserving local history.

Nicor Gas Granted Utility Easement
The board approved a resolution granting a permanent utility easement to Nicor Gas Company. The easement is located on village-owned property along the south side of Wilmington-Peotone Road between Gull View Drive and Meadow Lane and is needed for the utility to access and maintain its transmission facilities.

Police to Place New Flock Cameras Near I-57
Police Chief David DeMik reported that he is finalizing the locations for three new Flock Security cameras funded by a recent opioid settlement grant. Citing the need to monitor the “I-57 heroin highway,” DeMik said some of the live-feed cameras will be placed near the interstate, with others located in the downtown area. The village’s current cameras will then be relocated to other parts of town.

Aqua Confirms Water Quality
Mayor Vieaux shared a letter from Aqua Illinois President Dave Carter, confirming the successful completion of a year-long water testing program. The enhanced sampling followed the village’s switch to Kankakee River water and affirmed that the village continues to receive high-quality water. Regular sampling will continue, but on a less frequent basis.

Bridge Inspections, Road Project Updates
Village Engineer Troy Golem announced that the Corning Avenue and Ridgeland Avenue bridges are due for their required four-year inspections, which will take place this week. He also updated the board on the West Street reconstruction project, noting that while design engineering is underway, federal funding for construction may not be available until 2030 or later.
