Meeting Summary and Briefs: Village of Peotone for December 15, 2025
Village of Peotone Meeting | December 15, 2025
The Peotone Village Board met on Monday, Dec. 15, 2025, to address a wide range of financial, safety, and development issues. The board approved a $715,751 tax levy and launched the 2027 budget process with reports of strong hotel tax and investment revenues. Trustees also welcomed a new police officer, updated building codes to the 2021 international standard, and announced a $100,000 donation from a nearby solar project. Grocery Tax Maintained:
The board approved Ordinance 25-13, correcting the language for the 1% municipal grocery tax. While the state of Illinois is eliminating its portion of the grocery tax effective Jan. 1, 2026, Peotone opted to maintain its local portion to prevent an estimated $160,000 annual revenue loss. The new ordinance satisfies specific phrasing requirements recently issued by the Illinois Department of Revenue.
West Street Reconstruction:
Village Engineer Troy Golem reported that the village has submitted for federal funding for the West Street reconstruction project from Wilmington-Peotone Road to Corning Avenue. While the project is a priority, Golem noted that the earliest possible construction funding through the Will County Governmental League is likely 2029.
Home Occupation Approved:
The board approved a home occupation permit for Bingo J Transportation LLC, located at 532 Hauert St. The item had been tabled in November due to communication issues regarding the nature of the business. After meeting with the applicant, Administrator Nick Palmer confirmed the business is a dispatch-only office with no trucks or customers visiting the residential location.
Storm Sewer Payout:
Trustees approved a partial payout of $8,830.08 to Iroquois Paving Corp. for work on the Conrad Storm Sewer project. The project, which was largely funded by an ARPA grant, is nearing completion with less than 1% retention remaining.
Westgate Manor Credit Reduction:
The board authorized reducing the letter of credit for the Westgate Manor subdivision from $85,000 to $50,000. Administrator Nick Palmer reported that significant work has been completed in the development, with only 10 parcels remaining unbuilt. The $50,000 balance ensures the village has $5,000 per parcel to guarantee the completion of remaining sidewalks and parkway trees.
Public Works Update:
Public Works Manager Bob Hennke reported that while recent heavy snowfall caused some equipment breakdowns, all snow trucks have been repaired and returned to service. Leaf collection remains “to be determined” as crews wait for frozen leaf piles to thaw. Hennke also noted that the shop will begin its winter project: sanding and repainting the village’s leaf machine.
