Community turns out in force despite frigid weather for day-long Christmas celebration

PEOTONE, Ill. — While winter weather dampened other major events in Peotone this year, Dec. 13’s Christmas in the Village proved that snow and cold temperatures only added to the small-town holiday magic.

The 11th annual celebration drew hundreds of residents and visitors throughout the day, with businesses across downtown transforming into winter wonderlands and community organizations hosting activities from dawn to dusk.

“I am very pleased with the community participation, even during the frigid weather,” said Peotone Christmas in the Village Chair Tammy Bettenhausen Cowger. “I just love seeing so many just enjoying the Christmas season while showcasing our businesses.”

Morning festivities draw record crowds

The day began at Peotone High School with the PTO’s annual pancake breakfast, which served more than 650 meals despite the weather conditions. The school gymnasium bustled with families enjoying a craft and vendor fair while Main Street Dance Company performed for enthusiastic audiences at 9:30 and 10:30 a.m.

“The Peotone PTO has been working hard for months on our annual Pancake Breakfast,” said PTO Co-President Victoria Theodossopoulos. “The building was filled with families and community members enjoying the many activities throughout the morning!”

A highlight of the morning event was the introduction of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, with Will County Executive Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant and her team on hand to help families enroll children in the literacy program.

“We are so very thankful to all our board members, volunteers, sponsors, and the community for continuing to make this annual event such a successful fundraiser for the students of our district,” Theodossopoulos said.

Downtown businesses embrace holiday spirit

Throughout downtown, local businesses created festive experiences that drew steady streams of visitors despite the cold. Johnson’s Greenhouses transformed into what looked like a winter wonderland with decorations that matched any magazine cover, offering s’mores and Christmas decor discounts.

Exclusive Realtors served hot dogs and hot cocoa alongside crafts and photo opportunities, while Archy’s delighted visitors with sweets, hot chocolate and friendly service. Even Midtone Tattoo embraced the celebration with decorated windows and temporary Christmas tattoos.

Game On Bar & Grill earned recognition as the best decorated business in town, providing a warm gathering spot for festival-goers, while Studio on Second offered festive photo opportunities throughout the day.

Activities span entire community

The celebration extended well beyond downtown, with activities scattered across Peotone. Janski’s became “a gemstone lover’s dream” with gems and ornament-making opportunities.

Christ Community Church hosted indoor bouncy houses, the park district featured the Grinch, and Firepit Bar & Grill offered cookie decorating. Dralle hosted pedal pulls, the Mill provided photo opportunities, and Peotone Bowl distributed treat bags.

Cornerstone Coffee was packed with families enjoying balloon designs and hot chocolate during the Santa Shuffle, while horse-drawn carriage rides provided magical tours through the festively lit downtown streets.

Perfect weather for winter celebration

As evening approached, snowflakes began falling just as the lighted parade—the day’s grand finale—prepared to roll down Second Street. The timing couldn’t have been better, creating a picture-perfect backdrop as decorated vehicles filled downtown with Christmas lights and music while crowds lined the snowy sidewalks.

While weather seemed to dampen every other major event in Peotone, it was a picture perfect backdrop for Christmas in small town Peotone.

The combination of fresh snow, twinkling lights, and community spirit created scenes that could have been pulled from a holiday movie, with families bundled up together enjoying the winter wonderland their town had become.

The success of this year’s celebration, despite challenging weather conditions, demonstrated the strength of Peotone’s community spirit and the dedication of local businesses and volunteers who made the day possible.

“Many thank you’s to our sponsors!” Cowger said. “Put December 12, 2026 on your calendar for our 12th annual Peotone Christmas in the Village.”

The event showcased how small-town celebrations can thrive when entire communities come together, proving that sometimes the best holiday magic happens not despite the weather, but because of it.
