Clifton Central Offense Rolls Every Inning in 11-1 Run-Rule Victory Over Peotone
The Clifton Central varsity baseball team put on a relentless offensive clinic on Wednesday afternoon, scoring in every single inning to secure an 11-1 run-rule victory over visiting Peotone. Combining a steady stream of base hits with aggressive capitalization on Peotone’s defensive miscues, Clifton Central systematically dismantled their non-conference opponent to end the game in the sixth inning.
Despite the lopsided final score, Peotone actually struck first. In the top of the first inning, Declan McMaster worked a walk, stole a base, and later crossed the plate on an RBI from sophomore Kayden Derkacy. However, that 1-0 advantage was the only lead the visitors would hold all day, as Clifton Central’s pitching staff locked in to toss five consecutive scoreless innings, striking out eight Peotone batters and stranding seven runners on base.
Clifton Central immediately answered with a run in the bottom of the first to tie the game before breaking things wide open in the second and third frames. The home team plated three runs in the second and another three in the third to build a commanding 7-1 advantage.
Peotone’s defense struggled under the constant pressure, committing five costly errors over the course of the afternoon. Those mistakes extended innings and forced Peotone starting pitcher T. Harshfield to throw extra pitches. Harshfield took the loss after battling through three innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on six hits while striking out three.
Offensively, Clifton Central’s bats were explosive, hammering out 11 total hits against Peotone’s pitching tandem of Harshfield and Derkacy. The home squad showcased its power, launching two home runs over the course of the afternoon to keep the Peotone defense on its heels.
For Peotone, offensive bright spots were scarce but present. Junior Alex Chenoweth provided an extra-base hit with a double, finishing 1-for-2 with a walk. Derkacy, Nick Moore, and Tyler Leitelt each added a hit for the visitors, but the lineup ultimately struggled to string together enough momentum to overcome the early deficit.
Clifton Central continued to methodically pull away, adding two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth. In the bottom of the sixth, the home team pushed across their 11th run of the game, officially triggering the 10-run mercy rule and sealing the 11-1 non-conference win.
