Wilmington Bats Roll Again in 14-1 Mercy-Rule Win Over Peotone
The Wilmington varsity baseball team completed a dominant sweep of their conference series against Peotone, rolling to a 14-1 victory in a five-inning, mercy-rule contest on Tuesday afternoon. Behind a massive offensive performance from Ryan Kettman and relentless production throughout the lineup, the Wildcats secured their second lopsided win over the Blue Devils in as many days.
Wilmington wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, plating three runs in the top of the first inning to take immediate control. After a scoreless second, the Wildcats’ offense shifted into high gear. The visitors erupted for five runs in the third inning and another five in the fourth, overwhelming the Peotone pitching staff to build a commanding 13-1 advantage.
Kettman was the driving force behind Wilmington’s relentless attack, enjoying a spectacular performance both at the plate and on the mound. Offensively, Kettman was nearly perfect, going 4-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. He also drew a walk and swiped a base. Brysen Meents and Nash Rink were also major contributors to the offensive onslaught, with Meents going 3-for-5 with a run scored and Rink driving in two runs on a 1-for-2 day.
Armed with a massive lead, Kettman cruised on the mound. The senior right-hander pitched all five innings for Wilmington, allowing just one earned run on four hits while striking out seven Peotone batters and walking two to earn the complete-game victory.
For Peotone, Tyler Leitelt drove in the team’s only run of the afternoon with an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth inning. Declan McMaster also added a hit for the Blue Devils, while Cole Peppers and Kayden Derkacy each recorded a single in the loss. Leitelt took the loss on the mound, battling through three innings and striking out four batters before Devin Lynch entered in relief.
