The Peotone varsity baseball team dropped an 8-2 conference road game to Herscher on Tuesday afternoon. Despite grabbing an early lead behind steady at-bats from Tyler Leitelt and Kayden Derkacy, the Blue Devils were ultimately undone by a late Herscher power surge and a stifling 17-strikeout performance by the opposing pitching staff.

Peotone struck first, pushing a run across in the top of the first inning to take immediate control. Herscher answered in the bottom half of the frame to tie the game at 1-1, but the Blue Devils kept the pressure on. In the top of the third, Alex Chenoweth crossed the plate for his second run of the day, allowing Peotone to reclaim a narrow 2-1 advantage.

Leitelt and Derkacy served as the primary engines for the Peotone offense. Both hitters turned in strong 2-for-3 performances at the plate while each drawing a walk, accounting for four of the team’s five total hits. Chenoweth provided the fifth hit and proved to be a consistent spark plug at the top of the lineup, scoring both of Peotone’s runs.

The momentum shifted dramatically in the bottom of the fourth inning. Herscher’s lineup found its rhythm, erupting for three runs to take a 4-2 lead. The home team didn’t look back, tacking on another three-run surge in the fifth and a final insurance run in the sixth. Nash Brubaker and Colton Carson delivered the decisive blows for Herscher, with both players launching home runs during the middle-inning rally.

On the mound, Leitelt took the loss for Peotone but battled gamely through four innings of work. The right-hander struck out six batters and allowed three earned runs on four hits before handing the ball over to the bullpen. Relievers Derkacy and Declan McMaster finished the contest, with Derkacy striking out one in his 1.1 innings of work.

Herscher’s pitching staff ultimately proved to be the difference-maker. Following a solid start from Tanner Jones—who struck out eight over 3.1 innings—reliever Gaige Brown shut the door entirely. Brown tossed 2.2 hitless, scoreless innings and struck out seven Peotone batters to earn the win. Brock Berns closed out the seventh, contributing two final strikeouts to bring Herscher’s staff total to an impressive 17 on the afternoon.
