The Peotone varsity baseball team fell victim to a massive fourth-inning surge on Wednesday afternoon, dropping an 11-1 non-conference road matchup to Beecher. Despite a solid start on the mound from Cole Peppers that kept the game close through three innings, a flurry of hits and untimely defensive miscues ultimately doomed the Blue Devils in a six-inning, mercy-rule defeat.

For the first three frames, the contest was tightly contested. Beecher scratched across a single run in the bottom of the first inning, but Peppers quickly settled into a rhythm. The Peotone starter blanked the home team in the second and third innings, keeping the Blue Devils within striking distance at 1-0.

However, the game slipped away in the bottom of the fourth. Beecher’s lineup found its timing and capitalized heavily on Peotone’s defensive struggles. The Blue Devils committed five errors on the afternoon, extending innings and allowing Beecher to erupt for eight runs in the frame, blowing the game wide open to establish a commanding 9-0 lead.

Peotone’s offense struggled to find traction against Beecher starter Chase Maher, who tossed a complete-game three-hitter. Sophomore Kayden Derkacy was a bright spot for the Blue Devils, going 2-for-3 at the plate and swiping a stolen base.

The Blue Devils finally broke up the shutout in the top of the sixth inning. Junior Tyler Leitelt delivered an RBI single to push Peotone’s lone run across the plate, capping a 1-for-2 afternoon that also included a stolen base. Eli Chenoweth added a stolen base of his own after drawing a walk.

Peppers took the loss for Peotone, allowing seven earned runs over 3.1 innings of work while striking out two batters. Declan McMaster entered the game in relief, tossing the final two innings and striking out one while yielding two earned runs. Maher earned the victory for Beecher, striking out six batters and navigating around three walks to secure the win. Beecher ended the contest in the bottom of the sixth with two final runs to invoke the 10-run run rule.
