Peotone Walks Off Marian Catholic 1-0 After Dueling One-Hitters

Senior S. Klawitter tossed a spectacular complete-game shutout, outdueling her counterpart in a classic pitcher’s matchup to lead the Peotone varsity softball team to a dramatic 1-0 walk-off victory over Marian Catholic on Thursday.

In a tense non-conference contest defined by overpowering pitching and flawless defense, runs were at an absolute premium. Both teams managed just one hit apiece over the course of the afternoon, as Klawitter and Marian Catholic pitcher Jackie Pollock matched each other pitch for pitch.

Klawitter was utterly dominant in the circle for Peotone. The senior ace allowed just a single hit—a single by Marian Catholic’s M. Thompson—and issued zero walks while racking up an incredible 14 strikeouts over seven spotless innings.

Pollock was equally impressive for the visitors, absorbing the tough-luck loss despite tossing a gem of her own. She went 6.2 innings, allowing just one unearned run on one hit, walking two, and striking out 10 Peotone batters. E. DeNormandie recorded the only hit for Marian Catholic, delivering a double to account for the team’s only scoring threat.

The game remained locked in a scoreless tie entering the bottom of the seventh inning. With the tension mounting, Peotone finally managed to manufacture the game’s only run. Junior Payton Schnelle led off the inning and provided the lone spark the hosts needed, delivering a clutch base hit to break up Pollock’s no-hit bid.

With Schnelle on the basepaths, a costly fielding error by the Marian Catholic defense ultimately allowed her to cross the plate with the game-winning run, sending the Peotone home crowd into a frenzy.
