A pivotal late-game surge proved to be the difference on Monday, as the Reed-Custer varsity baseball team battled its way to a hard-fought 10-8 road conference victory over Peotone.

In a wildly unpredictable contest characterized by fielding errors and opportunistic offense, Reed-Custer found a way to capitalize when it mattered most. Trailing early, the visitors staged a dramatic comeback by scoring all 10 of their runs in the final four innings, including a decisive five-run outburst in the top of the seventh.

Peotone appeared to be in control through the early frames, consistently applying pressure to build a lead. The hosts struck for two runs in the bottom of the first, added one in the second, and extended their advantage with another pair in the third.

However, Peotone’s defense faltered down the stretch, committing four costly errors that ultimately derailed their strong start. Remarkably, of the 10 runs surrendered by the Peotone pitching staff, only two were earned.

Relief pitcher Tyler Leitelt turned in an impressive performance on the mound for the hosts despite taking the no-decision. Leitelt struck out nine batters and allowed zero earned runs over 4.2 innings, but the unearned runs piled up behind him.

Reed-Custer’s offense made the most of its opportunities, powered by key performances from C. Mounts, Jeffrey Wolford, and A. Fierro. Wolford was heavily involved, going 2-for-4 with a team-high three runs scored. Mounts reached base in all four of his plate appearances, tallying a hit, a walk, and a hit-by-pitch while scoring twice. Fierro also drove in a pair of runs with his two hits.

Thomas Emery earned the win on the mound for Reed-Custer with two dominant innings of hitless relief, striking out four to close out the victory. Starter A. Fierro labored through five innings, allowing six earned runs on six hits while striking out four.

Peotone’s offense was paced by Eli Chenoweth, Tyler Leitelt, and Lincoln Tierney. Chenoweth went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, Leitelt reached base in all five of his plate appearances (two hits, two walks) and scored twice, and Tierney drove in a run while scoring once.
