The Coal City track and field program offered a glimpse of a very bright future on Tuesday, April 21, as both the boys’ and girls’ teams captured team championships at the Manteno Conference Frosh/Soph Meet.

Relying on immense depth and exceptional individual talent across all disciplines, the Coal City boys amassed 153.5 points, comfortably distancing themselves from host Manteno (96) and Herscher (86). The Coal City girls completed the program sweep with a 95-point performance, holding off strong challenges from Manteno (79) and Braidwood Reed-Custer (64).

The Coal City boys’ victory was fueled by dominance in the sprints and field events. Alexander Duran opened the individual track events with a victory in the 100-meter dash (11.73), while teammate LeRiyahn Hunter followed suit by claiming the 200-meter title (24.04). Both sprinters also contributed to Coal City’s winning 4×100 relay team. Frank Roehr was a dual-event winner for the Coalers, capturing gold in the 300-meter hurdles (45.57) and bounding to a first-place finish in the triple jump (10.84m).

In the throwing rings, the Coal City boys were untouchable. Carson Dearth secured the shot put title with a personal-best toss of 10.83 meters, and Kiptyn Dearth hurled the discus 30.71 meters to claim the top spot on the podium.

Despite Coal City’s overwhelming team margin, the host Manteno Panthers put together a strong runner-up campaign. Emilio Estrada Lean took the 110-meter hurdles in 18.78, while Thomas Coyle cleared 1.70 meters to win the high jump. Herscher also made its mark on the track by sweeping the long-distance events, with Connor Heck winning the 1600 meters (5:32.81) and Evan Benoit taking the 3200 meters (10:30.60).

On the girls’ side, Coal City showcased a well-rounded attack that scored heavily on the track and in the jumps. Freshman Kinsley Nowak led the charge with a pair of individual victories, breaking the tape in the 100-meter dash (13.68) and soaring to a win in the long jump (4.90m). Coal City also controlled the mid-to-long distance races, picking up consecutive track victories from Jaylyn Hogan in the 400 meters (1:06.64), Carmella Ferrara in the 800 meters (2:57.02), and Savanna Freis in the 1600 meters (6:31.65).

Host Manteno utilized a commanding hurdle presence and relay strength to secure second place overall. Sawyer Maveety won the 100-meter hurdles in 17.84, and Klarke Goranson cruised to victory in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 46.33. The Panthers also claimed gold in the 4×200 and 4×800 relays.

Other notable performances in the girls’ competition included Braidwood Reed-Custer’s Isabella Dixon, who sprinted to a win in the 200 meters (27.58) and anchored her team’s victorious 4×400 relay. In the field, Streator’s Ariana Gavina unleashed a personal-best 20.96-meter throw to win the discus, and Herscher’s Pyper Johnston took the shot put title with a 7.35-meter mark.
