Klawitter’s 16 Strikeouts, Freshman Homer Propel Peotone Past Grant Park 3-1
Behind a spectacular 16-strikeout pitching performance from senior S. Klawitter and a crucial home run from freshman Mary Klawitter, the Peotone varsity softball team secured a hard-fought 3-1 non-conference road victory over Grant Park on Friday afternoon.
The matchup was defined by dominant pitching from both sides, but Peotone (25-26) managed to strike first. The visitors pushed a run across the plate in the top of the first inning to take an early 1-0 advantage. Grant Park (25-26) starter Cheyenne Hayes quickly settled in, trading zeros with S. Klawitter through the next two frames to keep the contest tight.
Peotone found its breakthrough in the top of the fourth inning. Mary Klawitter provided the fireworks, launching a home run to spark a two-run rally that extended the visitors’ lead to 3-0. Freshman P. Schnelle was a constant threat at the plate for Peotone, finishing 2-for-3 with an RBI, while senior Ava Kosmos added an RBI single.
Armed with a three-run cushion, S. Klawitter completely stifled the Grant Park lineup. The senior ace tossed a complete game, scattering six hits and allowing just one earned run over seven innings. She commanded the strike zone relentlessly, racking up 16 strikeouts and issuing only two walks to neutralize any sustained Grant Park rallies.
Grant Park refused to go quietly, battling until the final out. The hosts finally broke through in the bottom of the seventh inning. Senior Cheyenne Hayes, who took the tough-luck loss in the circle after striking out nine over seven innings, delivered an RBI double to get Grant Park on the board. Junior Reegan Thompson paced the hosts offensively with a 2-for-4 performance, and freshman Delaney Heldt added a triple. However, S. Klawitter slammed the door shut, securing the final outs to preserve the 3-1 victory.
