Peotone Offense Feasts on Free Passes, Defeats Grant Park 15-7

Capitalizing on a staggering 15 walks and six hit batsmen, the Peotone varsity baseball team turned patience into production on Friday, securing a 15-7 non-conference road victory over Grant Park.

Peotone (25-26) broke the game open in the early innings. Following a scoreless first, the visitors erupted for five runs in the top of the second and added three more in the third. The offensive surge was fueled by drawing walks and taking advantage of multiple Grant Park defensive miscues, as seven of Peotone’s first eight runs were unearned. The visitors tacked on three more runs in the fourth inning to build a commanding 11-1 advantage.

Sophomore Kayden Derkacy was a massive run producer for Peotone, driving in five runs while finishing 1-for-3 with three walks, a run scored, and a stolen base. Lincoln Tierney sparked the offense with two hits and three runs scored, while Brian Bass went 1-for-2 with two walks and three runs scored. Senior Everett Carder, Tyler Leitelt, and Eli Chenoweth also added hits to keep the lineup moving.

Grant Park (25-26) struggled with command on the mound all afternoon. The hosts utilized three pitchers—Joey McGinley, Connor Manahan, and Ethan Peterson—but none could consistently find the strike zone. The pitching staff combined to issue 15 walks and hit six batters, constantly putting themselves in high-stress situations.

Despite the massive early deficit, Grant Park refused to quit and mounted a late offensive push. Trailing 11-1, the hosts pushed four runs across the plate in the bottom of the fifth inning, avoiding the mercy rule and extending the contest. They added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings but could not overcome the massive early hole.

Joey McGinley anchored the Grant Park lineup with a stellar 3-for-3 day, adding an RBI and a run scored. Aiden Overbeek finished 1-for-4 with three RBIs, while Dean Malkowski added a hit, two runs scored, and an RBI. O. Malkowski and Caiden Krone also contributed hits for the hosts.

Declan McMaster earned the win in relief for Peotone, providing three solid innings of work. The senior allowed one earned run on three hits, striking out three to close out the 15-7 victory.
