Klawitter’s 11-Strikeout Shutout Powers Peotone Past Momence 9-0

Senior pitcher Sophie Klawitter delivered a masterful performance in the circle, striking out 11 batters to lead the Peotone varsity softball team to a commanding 9-0, five-inning shutout over Momence in Friday’s non-conference home matchup.

The Blue Devils gave their ace all the run support she would need before she even threw a pitch in the second inning. Peotone’s offense exploded out of the gates, overwhelming the Momence defense in the bottom of the first to plate five runs and seize immediate control of the contest.

Armed with a sizable early advantage, Klawitter went to work dissecting the Momence lineup. The senior was virtually untouchable over her five innings of work, allowing just two hits and issuing zero walks. Remarkably, 11 of the 15 outs she recorded came via the strikeout, completely suffocating the visitors’ chances of mounting any kind of rally.

Peotone continued to apply pressure offensively as the game progressed. The home team added a single run in the third inning and ultimately invoked the mercy rule with a three-run surge in the bottom of the fifth, sealing the 9-0 victory.

Adyson Kosmos was a primary catalyst for the Blue Devils, reaching base safely in all of her plate appearances. The sophomore went a perfect 2-for-2 with a double, a walk, a stolen base, and three runs scored. Freshman Mary Klawitter also swung a heavy bat, going 3-for-4 with a triple, a run scored, and an RBI.

Junior M. Scheffers contributed a strong multi-hit performance, going 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, while S. Klawitter helped her own cause at the plate by ripping an RBI double. A. Christenberry added an RBI triple of her own to keep the offensive line moving.

Freshmen Jaesyn Walk and Kinsley Young managed the only two hits of the afternoon for Momence. Freshman pitcher A. Wilkinson absorbed the loss in the circle, tossing 4.1 innings against a relentless Peotone lineup that racked up 13 hits on the day.
