Fifth-Inning Rally Lifts Wilmington Past Peotone in Conference Shutout
The Peotone varsity softball team suffered a hard-fought 3-0 conference loss at home against Wilmington on Tuesday afternoon. Wilmington sophomore Taryn Gilbert tossed a complete-game, two-hit shutout, narrowly outdueling Peotone senior right-hander Sophie Klawitter in a tightly contested pitchers’ duel.
For four complete innings, the two aces traded zeroes on the scoreboard. Klawitter commanded the circle for the Blue Devils, racking up strikeouts and keeping the Wilmington offense off balance. Gilbert was equally impressive, efficiently navigating the Peotone lineup and relying on a flawless Wildcats defense behind her.
The stalemate finally broke in the top of the fifth inning. Wilmington capitalized on a pair of defensive miscues by the Blue Devils and strung together timely hits to mount the game’s only successful rally. The Wildcats pushed three runs across the plate—two of them earned—to establish a 3-0 advantage that would hold for the remainder of the afternoon.
Nina Egizio and Keeley Walsh were the offensive catalysts for Wilmington, each recording a multi-hit performance. Egizio went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while Walsh matched her with a 3-for-4 day, adding a stolen base and a run scored. Senior T. Stefancic also delivered in the clutch for the visitors, ripping an RBI double to help fuel the decisive fifth-inning surge.
Despite taking the loss, Sophie Klawitter turned in another stellar complete-game performance for Peotone. The senior went the distance, allowing just two earned runs on six hits while striking out eight batters and issuing only one walk over seven innings of work.
Offensively, the Blue Devils struggled to find gaps against Gilbert’s pinpoint control. Freshman Mary Klawitter recorded the team’s only extra-base hit with a double, while Sophie Klawitter added a single to account for Peotone’s two hits on the day. Gilbert finished her dominant 64-pitch shutout with five strikeouts and zero walks.
